Agriculture Today

In recent years there has been a considerable change in farming and the farm community. I have only been teaching for three years so I cannot compare the decrease in "farm kids" in my classes. But I can compare it to when I was in high school. There are a considerable number of non-farm kids now. When I was in school there was a large portion of the kids who lived on farms or at least in the "country". But now the only kids who live outside of town are wealthy and don't know the first thing about the farm. Also, kids don't realize that their food doesn't just come from Wal-Mart. Also, kids don't realize the growing season and what happens on a farm when the crops are growing in the ground.
this past weekend I visited my Great-Aunt and Uncle on their farm. My Uncle has about 35-50 tractors that he has collected over the years. When asked if he would sell any of them he said no. I don't want someone using them for their unintended purpose. Which means he didn't want the history of these great machines distorted or sold on eBay. Farming used to include the entire family not just the boys. Families were closer then and had fewer social problems than what they do now. Maybe instead of trying to forget the past I think we should do like my Uncle and preserve it.
